Zirconia Implants: Filling a Void in Implant Dentistry

Course Intent:

This course is lead by Drs. Sammy Noumbissi and Ralf Luettmann. It is designed to give clinicians the ability to understand zirconia as a material and the rationale for using bioceramics in implant dentistry. This course will provide training on one-piece zirconia dental implants. An emphasis will be placed on appropriate case selection, case planning, flap design, immediate or delayed zirconia implant placement, temporization methods and minor adjunctive bone grafting procedures. This program is a combination of in-depth lecture, video surgery and hands-on over the shoulder workshop with models on immediate and delayed metal-free implantation. During the hands on training part of this course participants will utilize all components of a zirconia surgical kit and will place zirconia implants in plastic mandibles. This is the closest thing to performing live surgery! Read more….

Abstract: Zirconia implants have been used in Europe for more than ten years. Because of their predictability, hypoallergenicity and high success rate, the demand and their use has significantly increased worldwide. The FDA has approved Zirconia implants for the US market since 2005 and they now fill a long standing void in implant dentistry. Zirconia implants will open a totally new frontier for dental implant practices that are serving patients with highly esthetic demands, or looking for a metal free teeth replacement solution. Additionally, zirconia implants will allow us to treat patients with metal allergies or individuals who simply object to the implantation of metals in their bodies or oral cavity. As it has been described in the literature, gingival response, soft tissue adaptation and bone integration to zirconia is optimal and has been proven to be superior to that seen around conventional dental implants and abutments. The one-piece monobloc configuration is not susceptible to microgap and zirconia does not allow for plaque accumulation around the abutment. Zirconia implants are not limited to crown and bridge teeth replacement, they are also designed for treatment of fully edentulous patients both in removable and fixed prosthetic configuration. Reconstructive prosthetic solutions with zirconia dental implants include implant-retained and implant-supported overdenture utilizing two to four implants with stud attachments for removable solutions and five or more implants in fixed prosthetic cases. In similar fashion to metal implants and in situations of full edentulism, zirconia implants can also be immediately loaded.
COURSE intent: This course is designed to give clinicians the ability to understand zirconia as a material and the rationale for using bioceramics in implant dentistry. Each participant will receive a manual with the PowerPoint slides from the lecture which will serve as a reference back in the office after the course. This course will provide training on one-piece zirconia dental implants. OBJECTIVES: Expand the spectrum of patient care. 3D implant planning and surgical guides. Indications for immediate loading of ceramic dental implants. Streamlining surgical procedures-Identifying and minimizing risk and failure. Return to your practice confident about ceramic implants. Improve your implant case results with higher esthetic predictability. Two piece tissue level ceramic implants versus monobloc ceramic implants. Post surgical care and evaluation Soft tissue management around zirconia implants. Minimally invasive procedures – treatment strategies. Restorative options for zirconia implants – Materials and techniques.
